Webtoon Mania

Lately, I have been suffering from the awfully humdrum ways of everyday living. Classes are not back until August, and the number ofproductive things left to do amounts to zero; I have read my books, I have tried writing,I have watched the movies I want to, etc. It cannot be more mundane.

Fortunately, I have found a new hobby that helps greatly to kill time ― *drum rolls* reading webtoons!

Webtoons (or webcomics) are originally from South Korea. These are basically digital comics released on certain online platforms such as comic-hosting mobile applications. Korean webtoons are a subgenre of manhwa (Koreans’ version of manga) that are posted as one long, scrolling page per chapter/strip.

Interested in reading webtoons? All you need to do is go to the App Store or Play Store and search for LINE Webtoon.

This is how the app looks like.

Actually, there are other apps, too, like NAVER and Daum, that provide hundreds of webtoons, but in Korean. LINE Webtoon is the only comic-hosting app I know that has English webtoons. There are also sites where you may read webtoons but using an app is a lot easier especially when using your phone. (You can even download episodes to read offline, but all of which will last only for a short period of time.)

If you ever get interested, here are 6 webtoons you should definitely read:

Set in the not so distant future, where people are not afraid of vampires anymore, Mari is a vampire who hides her identity to live a normal life, but falls for high school hearththrob Jaemin, who hates vampires. This webtoon has actually been turned into a Korean drama (which is still running) starring actor Yeo Jin Goo, AOA’s Seolhyun, and CNBLUE’s Lee Jonghyun. You don’t wanna miss any of this high school vampire love story, I am telling you!

2. BASTARD by Youngchan Hwang/Carnby Kim

The story is about a troubled teenage boy with inner struggles who is disgusted by his father. This webtoon gives us a sight to the thrilling plight of an emtionally-challenged young boy; one that is not for the faint-hearted. You have been warned.

3. HOW TO LOVE by Dorris McComics

As it says in its summary, this webtoon is “a heart-warming, heart-cooking, heart-eating, heart-digesting guide to love.” Trust me when I say that you still don’t know everything about love, because in this webtoon, you will still learn. This is highly-recommended!

4. WHERE TANGENTS MEET by instantmiso

Another high school love story!  Landon, who “was born into the media of society,” falls for timid school council officer Rachelle. The story is realistic, calm, and very heartfelt. These are few of the many treasures of Where Tangents Meet. Unlikely are the chances of not  liking this webtoon.

5. ELENA by Jorge Jaramillo

A “web graphic novel about a larger than life love story.” This webtoon has elements of mystery, thriller, cult, and suspense. It answers how far can love actually go. Of all the webtoons featured on this post, this webtoon has the best illustrations! But, I am telling you now that this is not for those who are weak at heart. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

6. WE BROKE UP by Ryu Chae Lyn

Ex-couple Woori and Wonyoung are forced to live under the same roof after encountering problems with regard to moving. The story revolves on how they realize how their lives have turned out without the other. This has been adapted to a web drama (which is also still running) starring 2NE1’s Sandara Park and WINNER’s Kang Seungyoon. It’s funny, it’s sensual, it’s heart-rending. It’s different from the usual, hands down. (This cannot be found on LINE Webtoon, but there are English translations on the web.)

Note: Featured images are screen grabs from the webtoons.
